Sports Medicine
Students who are enrolled in Sports Medicine are concurrently enrolled in Allied Health. The two classes complement one another by providing students with an overview of careers in healthcare and the day-to-day actions of allied health professionals including athletic trainers, physical therapists, nurses and many others.
Students who complete the course will learn anatomy (with an emphasis on musculoskeletal anatomy), medical terminology, emergency procedures, injury assessment and management, as well as therapeutic interventions. Other topics include vital signs, nutrition, and taping and bracing for athletes.
In class, there are opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in scenario-based learning assignments. Classmates are encouraged to demonstrate professional qualities of a healthcare worker as they work with patients.
Students will be trained in American Heart Association (AHA) CPR at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level, which includes the use of AEDs. The CPR Certification card is considered a secondary credential.
